Wilhelmshaven connecting pipeline (WAL)

In the summer of this year, FRIEDRICH VORWERK in Tostedt was awarded the contract for the realization of part of the connecting pipeline for the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven. The order covers the construction section from Sillenstede near Schortens to the NETRA pipeline near the gas storage facility in Etzel. Work on the construction of a jetty for floating LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven began back in May this year. Two floating LNG terminals are to be connected there by the end of the year.

The official start of construction of the tie-in pipeline was August 22, 2022, and since then the VORWERK and Bohlen & Doyen teams have been working at full speed to ensure that the pipeline construction is completed by December 02, 2022. Thanks to the excellent work of the team, we were able to realize this deadline 18 days earlier.

At peak times, around 170 workers were working on the project. There were 27 crawler cranes in operation, which is quite unusual and is due to the fact that we could only carry out the pipe-laying safely with crawler cranes due to the prevailing ground conditions.

In October, the pipe-laying and bending activities were completed. Until then, we had to drive about 7,000 tons of sheet piles because of the ground conditions. Each week, approx. 60 trucks with sheet piling material were unloaded and delivered to the corresponding approx. 90 locations in the construction field. In addition, the main part of the activities concentrated on pipe trenching, lowering and connecting the pipes, and backfilling in a timely manner.

In parallel, station construction was carried out at the GDRM facility in Horsten/Friedeburg and at the LSE station in Schortens. The construction progress of the prefabricated spools could be followed on a daily basis - these were pre-welded in Wiesmoor, already tested and accepted. The stations were handed over on schedule and ready for operation in December.

On 12.12. the connection to the existing long-distance line NETRA is to be carried out. In addition, the first construction roads are already being removed and the construction site is being prepared for winter. Our subsidiary EPS is carrying out the last pigging and drying operations.

Next year, as soon as the weather permits, the final work, such as the installation of the drainage and the topsoil restoration, will be carried out before the construction project can finally be handed over to the customer.
