FRIEDRICH VORWERK wins contract for the realisation of a 10 MW electrolysis plant

FRIEDRICH VORWERK has received an order from the Norwegian energy group Statkraft for the realisation of an electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen with a planned electrical output of 10 MW. The company has started with the detailed planning of the project and with the preparation for final official authorisations. As soon as these and the authorisation for the start of the main construction phase have been granted by the client, we will be responsible for all phases of the construction value chain. In terms of technology, the project will once again rely on the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis process, with which FRIEDRICH VORWERK has already gained important experience in various previous projects. The first preparatory construction measures are already underway at the power plant site. The electrolyser is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027.
Statkraft plans to build and operate the pilot plant at the existing site in Emden, Lower Saxony, where the company already operates a biomass and a gas-fired power plant. It is planned that the plant will be integrated into the existing infrastructure of the power plant and, with an output of 10 MW, will produce around 200 kg of green hydrogen per hour based on renewable energy. This will initially be made available to the regional transport sector via hydrogen refuelling stations.
The planned project in Emden is just one of many hydrogen projects that are currently being realised. With the hydrogen core network recently approved by the Federal Network Agency with a total length of over 9,000 km, the first basic framework for a nationwide hydrogen transport infrastructure is to be created as early as 2025. This will allow central production sites to be successively connected to the largest consumers of hydrogen. This is an important prerequisite for a successful hydrogen ramp-up in Germany. Due to its broad service and technology portfolio and decades of experience in the field of qualified pipeline and large-scale plant construction, FRIEDRICH VORWERK expects demand in the hydrogen sector to grow strongly in the future.
